Beer Culture WNC

Asheville, NC is said to be Beer City USA. With a craft beer brewery or tap room around almost every corner, it's hard to deny that beer culture in Asheville is difficult to live up to. Henderson County, however, is an up and coming beerhound of its own right. With over five breweries including beer and cider selections brewed from local ingredients, Henderson County is making a splash in the beer world.

Even though Hendersonville is coming into its own as a beer hub, Asheville is the original Beer City and has the chops to prove it.

Highland Brewing has been around Asheville since 2006, but up until 2010 there was no tasting room, only brewing going on at the Asheville location. Once the doors to the tasting room opened there was no going back, with the addition of an outdoor stage and bar plus an expansion in 2011 and in 2016 the addition of the rooftop bar Highland Brewing is quickly becoming an all-purpose venue. Food trucks park in the parking lot ready to serve so nobody goes hungry, and visitors can post-up inside or outside during warm weather.

Wicked Weed found a home on Biltmore Avenue in 2012. Since opening its door at its preliminary location, it has opened a secondary brewing location, where visitors can tour the unique flavors. Its third location, the Funkatorium is a taproom dedicated to the tasting of sour and funky beer. Wicked Weed beer is found in restaurants and beers all across North Carolina and is a favorite of many locals and tourists alike.

Southern Appalachian Brewing is located just off of Main Street Hendersonville on 7th Avenue. Southern Appalachian opened its doors in 2011 and was ahead of its time as the first brewery in Hendersonville. Southern App has a variety of year-round as well as seasonal beers. Many outdoor events take place there and it is known as a pet and family friendly establishment.

Sanctuary Brewing Company is a fairly new installment in Downtown Hendersonville. Not only do they serve beer brewed in-house, but they also believe in supporting other local breweries and dedicate multiple taps to locally made hard cider and beer. Their other passion is animals and animal rescue. You can check out Sanctuary if you’re looking for a live band or trivia on a Tuesday night, or if you wanted to partake in some Yoga with Pets on a Saturday morning, sans beer. The brewery is completely pet friendly.

If beer isn’t your preference we also have ciderhouses. Flat Rock Cider Works works has a tap room located conveniently on Main Street in Downtown Hendersonville. At the tap room you can try the different flavors of Flat Rock Cider Works Cider, grown, pressed and brewed right here in Henderson County.

oskar blues

In 2012 Oskar Blues opened the doors of its Brevard brewery to the public. Oskar Blues has played a major role in the Brevard community, even sponsoring 2016’s Fourth of July celebration. The brewery is complete with free daily tours and a tap room. You might be wondering if they serve food and the answer is to search no further than their CHUBwagon which is stocked with CHUBurgers and tacos, sold on-site. Oskar Blues boasts a 10-minute bike ride from Pisgah National Forest, so no one, even the hikers, has an excuse to miss out on Dale’s Pale Ale or Mama’s Little Yella Pils.

Mills River

Head out to Mills River and you can visit Bold Rock Hard Cider’s brewery and tasting room. At the brewery you can take a complimentary tour and visit the tasting room for a drink afterwards. Look overhead and view the bottling line. Bold Rock utilizes  local apples in its local blends of Carolina Apple and Carolina Draft ciders.
